Our story

01 / 05

We build the hive

Our sustainable treetop bar hives are hand-built by Zambian locals. They are specially designed to make harvesting easier and kinder to the environment.

02 / 05

We train the family

Local families are trained in key beekeeping skills to manage and maintain their hives.

03 / 05

It goes up into the Miombo

Hung high in the trees for wild African bees to find. The traditional bark hive strips the tree and eventually kills it. Ours leaves the tree standing.

04 / 05

We buy the honey, above market rate

Around 12kg a hive, and we buy every harvest above the going rate. The profit goes back into hives for more families, which is where the next hive comes from.

05 / 05

We jar it and sell it across the world

The honey is jarred under the Mama Buci label and sold in health food shops and homes far from the Miombo. Every pot you buy helps pay for the next hive.

Honey for Change

The honey pays for the schools

In 2005 we founded the charity Give Hope Africa, to give children in some of the poorest areas in Africa a chance in life through education. We are currently running projects in both Zambia and Ethiopia.

Our first major community project began in 2006. The Limapela Foundation runs the school day to day, with Give Hope providing the funding that maintains it and increases the number of children reached.
